Living with Hepatitis C

Once the diagnosis of Hepatitis C has been made there are many things that need to be done. The first will be to begin a treatment program. This will be something that you will discuss with your health care provider. Equally as important as what drug therapy you should use, how high your viral load is, and if you need a liver biopsy is how you are going to get on with your life. You cannot permit yourself to stop living because of this diagnosis. Serious liver disease can take twenty to forty years to become a problem for you from the time of diagnosis so you must begin to look to the future.

The place to begin is your mental health. No matter how you contracted the Hepatitis C virus there is no opportunity to go back in time and change that. Blaming yourself will not make it go away. Whether it came from things you did, injection drugs, or things that were done to you, blood transfusion with tainted blood, you must be prepared to get on with your life. Some ways to do this include confiding in those you know will be supportive. A group of close friends and family who can be there for you through this will help. If you are a religious person then you can find support through your religious leader. Look for support groups or chats rooms so you can talk to others who will know exactly what you are going through.

Eating and sleeping well are very important. Hepatitis C can make you more tired and if you are in the midst of a drug therapy treatment that will also tire you. If you need a nap, take one it does not have to be a long one to do its job. Eating well is also very important. Try to have well balanced meals that include lots of fresh vegetables and fruits. Drink lots of water, it is important to help your system flush. Do not take any kind of vitamin or other supplements without consulting your health care provider. Too much of a good thing can be harmful as well. The way you eat can improve your liver by encouraging the production of new liver cells.

Stay away from using alcohol in any form. You are suffering from liver disease. Alcohol causes liver disease, which should show you that it’s not something that is good for your present condition. It can also increase the possibility of the liver disease turning into liver cancer. You should not smoke or use illegal drugs either.

You will soon learn that making these lifestyles changes is not really that difficult and that overall you’ll feel better. This will let you know that you are doing the right thing. If you follow these simple rules you’ll find that you can learn to live with the news you have been given and have a full and productive life with only the most minor changes being necessary.
